Ancient image challenge #2: Hint #5

Maise already knew the work of Thomas William Downes.  However, until preparing this challenge he still didn't know what those circles were.

Lets look at a watercolor by Downes.

This photo of the painting came from !the person that posted an excellent article explaining how the Maori people of New Zealand harvested longfin eel.  Notice it is being lured by a bird onto a skid so it can be pulled from the water.   The phrase “cultural keystone species” was introduced in 2004 in a paper by Ann Garibaldi and Nancy Turner
